Driving in Kenya

Kenya hotels

Driving in Kenya is done on the left hand side and at junctions and intersections. You give way to traffic coming from the right. The best option is to have an international driver's license since the national driver's license and the UK driver's license usually expire after three months and if you are planning on staying longer than this, you will be required to have a Kenyan license. The government and stakeholders have ignored the roads outside of Nairobi and you should therefore be ready to drive on poor roads. When it rains, it is even difficult to drive in a saloon car especially when you get to the dirt roads. A 4WD would be a good option in such times.

Driving on Kenyan highways is relatively safe with most of the danger coming from other motorists. You need to be keen especially with the matatus (public service mini vans) and some commuter buses which are always in a hurry to pick up passengers and are known to stop right in front of your car to avoid having the passengers getting picked by another competing matatu.

Do not drive alone at night and do not drive on abandoned roads to unknown destinations. General rules of safety applied anywhere in the world should be used when driving in Kenya .
