Kenya Climbing

The major climbing spot in Kenya is done on Mount Kenya itself and has been for over a hundred years since the Batian was climbed by Halford Mackinder. Climbing the mountain can be approached from several different routs including Naro Moru, the Chogoria route or you can go through Sirimon.

Mount Kenya is the second highest mountain in East Africa and it stands on the equator. Its tallest peak is the Batian at 5199 meters high and has the Nelion at 5188 meters and Lenana which can be accessed by climbers at 4985 meters and is great for alpine climbing.

There are other spots where you can do spot climbing and cragging and these are just 45 minutes to an hour from Nairobi . For instance, there is Hell's Gate which is about 90 minutes from Nairobi and it is a well secured area with about 180 meters.

Lukenya is a member's only area since it is privately owned land. You can also go to Tsavo National Park where climbers are encouraged to have a Park ranger to escort them since this is the land of the man eating lions of the 1890s. There are lots of untouched rocks to climb but they should be done by professional climbers.

The Mountain Club has met for many years at Wilson airport at 7.30pm in their club house and good way to learn about and to join any expeditions and trips. (020 602330).
